Two Risks Every Local Business Needs to be Aware of this Year

Details

As we all know, being highly searchable on the web is of utmost importance to local businesses whose model is driven by their online presence. If you own a local business, always remember one thing: The better is your visibility online the higher are your chances of attracting the customers’ attention. Change is the only constant in the online space and you always need to be ‘digital-ready’ in terms of your ability to calibrate your strategies to cope with constant changes in search engine algorithms and new online strategies, to remain at the top of your business. Otherwise, you are at a great risk. This year, there are two major risks that local businesses cannot afford to ignore.

Not going mobile-friendly

If your website traffic is plummeting all of a sudden, blame it on ‘Mobilegeddon’, the popular term used to refer Google’s ‘Mobile-friendly algorithm’ implemented on Tuesday, April 21. Google is downgrading websites that are not ‘mobile-friendly’ and it is a massive change in terms of its scale and impact on search results.

Google has said it wants consumers to "find content that's not only relevant and timely, but also easy to read and interact with on smaller mobile screens." And TechCrunch found that 44% of the Fortune 500 companies failed the mobile friendly test!

And according to a survey, 61% of consumers are not willing to visit a website that is not mobile-friendly, due to slow navigation and difficulty in reading. It sufficiently hints at the nature of risk of having a ‘mobile-unfriendly’ website.

For small and local businesses, it only means this: Everything now boils down to how much your website, landing pages and blog are optimized for mobile. Sites that haven't updated could find themselves ranked way lower, which in turn could mean a huge loss of business.

Looking at it positively and being flexible to changes is the way to tackle this risk. Read it this way: Google is going to reward mobile-friendly sites, and do what all it needs to enjoy the reward.

Google has provided a new free tool to conduct a ‘Mobile-Friendly Test’ that tells you how mobile-compatible are your websites and what is needed to prepare for the new search algorithm. It tells you why your site is not friendly (like ‘text too small to read’, ‘links too close to set’, etc.), how the search engine sees your page, and gives tips on how to make the pages mobile-friendly.

Being invisible on Google:

If your business is ranked way lower on Google search, it means your online business is not really going great and that you have miles go before you reach the top. For that, your business needs to be among the top search results too. If not, it is the second serious risk that local businesses cannot afford to overlook.

Being invisible on Google puts a question mark on the credibility of your company and your eagerness to promote your business. Google plays an important role in digital marketing and a good job done here to leverage the Google advantage can takeyour business to a new level. Poor visibility on Google may affect your brand value, brand recall, and thereby your business. It is because you are not there when customers search for products and services that your business offers, and the beneficiary would be your competitor who shows up at the top and enjoys all the attention.

Lower ranking on Google search is a risk that needs your immediate attention. Go and learn the ways to optimize the content and layout of your website, incorporate latest SEO strategies to move up the search ranking ladder, find ways to attract customers online, and be ‘digital-ready’.
