Your online store is like any other shopping store for customers. They value good service and would expect you to deliver on time. It is embarrassing for you if an order is delayed, lost during transit or the customer receives a wrong item. The quick and simple mantra is to check shopping cart, send confirmation email and follow it up. 

Once you send the confirmation email, you promise the customer to fulfill the order as promised. Your email should have the tracking number and a unique bar code assigned to that product (apart from other details) in case of any complaints. You need to keep an eye on logistics of product shipping right from the warehouse, post office, and delivery center to customer location.

The question is: How to make this procedure smooth and systematized? The  following are a few ways:

 

1.  As said earlier, have a unique tracking number for each order and share it with your customers to give them access to real-time order tracking.

 

2. Give your customers a direct link to carrier’s site so that they can also contact the carrier operator to know about shipment details once they are updated on your online store.

 

3. Have a uniform print packing slip and shipment label system. Upgrade to a software that can make your work easy.

 

4. Track the order yourself. Whether it is production tracking where the order goes through several stages of customization before it is out, or simple product tracking, keep an eye on the shipment to avoid  any delay, damage or loss. The tracking also helps you to understand loopholes in this process so that you can plug them while dealing with future orders.

 

5. Once the order is shipped, send a confirmation mail to your customer. Thank him/her for ordering and provide all relevant shipping and order tracking details he/she requires, besides customer care details. This will help you build good relation with your customers.

 

6. Once the order is fulfilled, always ask for feedback through a product review email. Stay connected with your customers to make your online fulfillment process better.

Many shipping agencies are now offering pickup services for sellers and charging minimal or no fee at all for their services. They rather look for long term commitment or bulk orders.
